com/ Job Overview: The mission of the State Law Library of Montana is to provide legal information and resources, to enhance knowledge of the law and court system, and to facilitate equal access to justice, statewide.
This position is focused on digitizing legal information and making it freely available for all Montana citizens.
The Digital Collections Specialist will focus on growing and maintaining the Law Library’s digital collections.
This type of work requires good computer skills, a familiarity with spreadsheets, uploading materials to internet platforms, attention to detail, data entry, database management, and project management skills.
A secondary component of this position will be assisting the technical services department by processing, updating, shelving, and maintaining print materials.
Additionally, there will be times in which the Reference team needs assistance with completing patrons’ requests.
Finally, all members of the Law Library team are trained on interacting with patrons, answering the telephone, and checking out materials.
Job Duties: · Scanning, processing, organizing, maintaining, and editing digital legal materials.
· Uploading documents to online platforms.
· Managing small and large projects with objectives, goals, and deadlines.
· Improving the metadata of digital collections.
· Checking materials in and out for patrons.
Searching for materials in our collection or at other libraries.
· Customer services and working with difficult customers.
· Providing directional and circulation assistance to patrons.
· Organizing, sorting, shelving, filing, and moving library materials; updating and maintaining materials in loose leaf binders; stamping and inserting updates; removing superseded pages.
· Assisting with opening and closing the Law Library.
Depending on one’s work schedule.
· Assists other library staff with special projects.
Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Behaviors): Knowledge of general library classification systems and services.
Knowledge of computer hardware and software, which may include word processing, spreadsheet, and database software.
Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and equipment.
Ability to follow detailed oral and written instructions.
Ability to carry out duties with minimal supervision.
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, with a diverse group of people.
Ability to assign, coordinate, prioritize and inspect work and to train and supervise others.
Ability to work effectively with the public and other library staff in a professional manner.
Ability to operate a computer, photocopier, and other modern office equipment.
Working Conditions: Work is performed primarily in a library environment.
Physical Demands: Work requires frequent sitting, walking, standing, reaching, bending, climbing stairs, and standing on a stool.
Lifting books and other materials weighing less than 25 pounds is required as well as moving a cart with many books loaded on it.
Work requires extended periods of computer use.
Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience) A bachelor's degree with coursework in library science, information services, or media services.
Experience working in a library setting.
Other relevant combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
